Knotty Alder wood is a medium to light density wood that features a color range of light browns with reddish tones. A dramatic wood grain with varying closed and open knots that will each receive stain uniquely. The holes created by the open knots can go completely through the cabinet.

Cherry

Cherry wood is a medium density wood that features a color range of rich red to dark reddish brown. Over time this wood will darken with exposure to light. A straight wood grain allows this wood to be machined and finished smooth. Easy to Stain.

Sapele

Sapele is characterized as a dense wood that has a straight and interlocked grain. The color varies slightly from a light reddish brown to a medium red. Sapele is a stain-grade wood. This is similar to Mahogany but easier to source.

Walnut

Walnut is a strong and durable wood. The color variation can range from light browns to dark browns and some have lighter color sap strips. The grain contains butts, burls, and curls. Walnut is a stain-grade option.

White Oak

White oak is a very hard and heavy wood. It ranges in color from very light to dark brown. It is straight-grained with medium to coarse texture. The tighter and straighter grain does not allow stain to penetrate easily. This creates a more consistent stain finish.

Red Oak

Red oak is a hard and heavy wood. Even with the heavy density and coarse texture, it sands and finishes easily. Because of its unique grain patterns, red oak is recommended as a stain grade.

Quarter Sawn White Oak

Quarter sawn white oak is a hard, tight-grained wood. Quarter sawing the white oak creates a charming “ribbon and flake” effect. This also causes the wood to be more stable because the direction of the wood grain lessens the negative effects of natural expansion and contraction.

Quarter sawn red oak is a heavy wood that is easy to finish. Quarter sawing red oak will create a beautiful “ribbon and flake” look with reddish tones. Quartering also causes red oak to be more stable.

Wormy or ambrosia maple is a medium-density wood. The unique striped pattern is a fungal discoloration caused by wood-boring beetles. The holes left by the ambrosia beetle can often be seen on the surface of the wood.

Soft Maple Paint Grade

Soft maple is a medium-density wood with good finishing properties. The grain is fine and tight; with some wormholes that will require filling. It is light in color with mineral streaking. This makes the wood poor for staining. We recommend soft maple as our paint-grade wood.

Maple is characterized as a dense hardwood that is light in color. It has a smooth grain with a non-porous surface making it great for a smooth, nontextured finish. Stain-grade maple is a premium grade of soft maple at a higher cost.
